The Terminating Collective

"The collective bands together through the design and construction phases and then disbands once the building has been strata or community titled. Hence the term, Terminating Collective."

For the Terminating Collective project, we worked  in collaboration with QUT’s Schools of Architecture and Property Economics researching new and economical methods of housing production. It is intended that these will then be realised in collaboration with the State Government to create a prototype for a new way that owners can achieve customised affordable housing.

The idea is not a new one. It has been common in Europe for over 50 years with tacit government support. The idea of a terminating collective is based on gathering numbers of interested parties together to procure their own medium density residential housing. The idea is that this housing can be customised, and is considerably more affordable and liveable than current models of medium density housing stock. The collective bands together through the design and construction phases and then disbands once the building has been strata or community titled. Hence the term, Terminating Collective.

We are currently working on a design prototype that will test this research in the marketplace.
